2009: It’s a New Year, A New Beginning

Happy New Year’s to everyone.  I wish you all a successful, safe, and prosperous year.

I love January 1st, it’s one of my favorite days of each year.  The new year is always a time for reflection and goal setting for me.  When I look back on 2008, I see that I spent a good deal of time actively pursuing my goal of becoming a published author.  And for me, that entailed a lot of time spent reading, contemplating and learning about the actual craft of writing– with not so much actual writing getting done 😉  .  But I wouldn’t call that a waste of time.  On the contrary, I now have a pretty solid base of knowledge and a good feel for both what I want to do, and what I need to do.

Now, on to my goals.  My primary focus for 2009 will be on actual production.  Getting published is still my dream, but it is more of a long term goal at this point.  My immediate goal is to finish a completed manuscript or two.  So with all this in mind, I set my 2009 writing goals with actual production in mind.

  1. Write for a hour a day, minimum
  2. Have at least 2 completed manuscripts by Dec 31, 2009
  3. Query/submit at least one manuscript this year
  4. Enter at least one contest this year
  5. Cycle through my craft books

By working towards 100% acheivement of these goals, I hope to learn more about myself as a writer, and as a person.  I will tag all future entries concerning my writing goals [the achievements and lack there ofs 😉 ] with the Goals tag so you can easily get pull them up from the tag cloud.

Hi La-Tessa! Sounds like you’ve lined up some great goals for the year. But if I could be so bold, I’d suggest entering more than one contest. Instead do as many as you can afford. There’s so much variability in contests and judges that only one could give you a skewed sense of your manuscript. Marie-Claude Bourke is doing an interesting series on contests at http://musetracks.wordpress.com/. Worth checking out! Good luck in the new year with all your terrific plans!

Thanks for the info, and the encouragement Jeffe. I just may pluck up the courage to enter more than one contest this year; or course that will depend on whether or not I just “Write the damn book!”–to quote one of my critique partners 😉

    La-Tessa,

Great goals for the new year, and it’s no surprise I share a lot of them! I, however, am far less ambitious than you and am hoping to finish just ONE–yes, one–manuscript. LOL But, as always, I applaud your positive attitude and undeniable drive. Best of luck! Here’s to a happy, healthy, and prosperous new year!

    LaTessa,

Great website, and practical goals for 2009. You’ve inspired me to write my own goals (which I probably won’t have the courage to put into print for fear of being held to them) 🙂

    Hey, Ms. La-Tessa!

Your site looks wonderful, and I think I share your sentiment about the New Year. April Fool’s Day and Halloween are my favorite holidays, but this New Year’s Day is a day I was looking forward to. Funny how a mere turn of the clock can leave you feeling so hopeful and renewed.

My 2009 demands are the same as yours, for the most part. I want to write for at least an hour a day, and I want to have completed two new manuscripts by 12/12/09, one adult romance and one picture book. I’d like to work up the guts to enter a contest, and I want to query agents. I think it’s time I accepted the fact that I just can’t do everything myself.

2009 will be your year, La-Tessa. Your fate is in your hands, and as long as you finish a manuscript and ship it off to an editor, you’ll get that contract you want.

    Just keep writing, my friend.

    The website looks awesome!

One look at your goals and I can see you’ve got it going on. Stick to them and don’t stray unless it’s for a VERY good reason. I only say that because stuff happens and writing has to take a backsweat sometime. That’s okay. Just stay the course, and your next website update will be adding a fabu bookcover. 😉

Those sound like great writing goals La-Tessa. I’ll be checking in with you from time to time to see how it’s going. I need to bone up on my craft book reading myself. lol

    Happy New Year!
